ADMIRAL ROLF CARLS/(1885-1945) Kriegsmarine Commanding Admiral for the Baltic, Commander of German naval forces during the Spanish Civil War, and Knight’s Cross recipient. One of two contenders to command the Kriegsmarine after Erich Raeder’s resignation, Carls resigned after Hitler nominated Karl Donitz instead. Killed in an air raid near the end of the war.
