HEINRICH HIMMLER/(1900 – 1945) Hitler’s Chief of the SS and Gestapo placed in charge of security and responsible for the construction and operation of extermination camps.
Typed D.S., 4pp. large 4to., “Field Headquarters”, Nov. 24, 1944. Himmler approves the award of the German Cross in Silver for Major Alfred Dorrong. The document is further co-signed by Waffen-SS Gen. HANS JUETTNER, head of the SS Operational Main Office and Command of the Combat SS and Permanent Deputy to Himmler as Commander of the Replacement Army, and by WALTER KEINER (1890-1978), an artillery general and Knights Cross recipient. Marginal file holes, else near fine. ALFRED DORRONG (b. 1908) served in the Polish and French campaigns, and in the attack on Russia. He was awarded the Iron Cross, 2nd Class and went on to serve on the Staff of Panzer Army Supreme Command 4 in early 1942, after which he joined the Feldzeug-Kommando III. He was given this award for discovering that halite would serve as a substitute for ammonium nitrate, a critical component of ammunition whose sources had been obliterated by Allied air attacks.
