FRANZ VON PAPEN
(1879 – 1969) Chancellor of Germany and Vice Chancellor in Hitler’s early years of power, von Papen was accused and later acquitted of war crimes. Good association in English, 1p. , Obersasbach, Oct. 6, 1957, addressed only to a ‘friend.’ In part: ‘…Wernher v. Braun’s father is an old friend of mine and he was Minister of Agriculture in my Cabinet. I know the sons too of course and Wernher has been at home this summer…the sovereign position of the Federal States vis-a-vis the Central Government…dominates the integration question and may have very far reaching consequences on the inner sector of USA policy. The left and communist papers throughout the world think it is a wonderful opportunity for leftist propaganda…’ Much more great political content, discussing socialism, the election of German chancellor LUDWIG ERHARD, and Germany’s lack of a ‘Middle-East policy’, adding: ‘…We Germans could do a lot – but we do not and continue to hope the French might settle it alone. A long missed opportunity!’ Von Papen adds one pen mark to the left margin of the first page, and adds numerous hand-inked emendations. Mailing folds and light creasing at the top, else fine.
