HJALMAR SCHACHT/(1877 – 1970) German financier and banker who engineered the rearmament of Germany. Broke with Hitler and joined the resistance when Germany went to war. Acquitted at Nuremberg. On his Reichsbank letterhead, 1p, Berlin, June 18, 1926 to GEORGE SYLVESTER VIERECK (1884-1962), American poet, propagandist and Germanophile; an early supporter of Hitler and general apologist for Nazism, convicted in 1942 for failing to register as a Nazi agent. In part: “…I obviously would enjoy it very much to see you, but I am sorry I cannot agree to give you a message for any publication, for I wish to as seldom as possible be quoted in the newspapers…and give as few interviews as possible..SCARCE
