VON FRIEDEBURG
(1895 – 1945) German admiral, the deputy commander of the U-boat forces and the last Commander-in-Chief of the Kriegsmarine. He was the only representative of the armed forces to be present at the signing of the German instruments of surrender in Luneburg Heath, Reims, and in Berlin on 8 May 1945. He committed suicide shortly afterwards, upon the dissolution of the Flensburg Government. Rare partial letter 1p. , in part: ‘…Normally, the incident would have been handled in an appropriate manner and with a bit of humor by the officer in charge; in this instance, however, the soldier had to deal with an unusually sensible officer who became extremely excited as a result of damage sustained by the effects of war…a report is to be submitted without fail to the military police…’
