BERNARD LAW MONTGOMERY (1887 – 1976) British Field Marshall who commenced the drive at El Alamein that ultimately drove Rommel from North Africa, also involved in the invasions of Sicily and France. Good content ‘Montgomery of Alamein,’ London, Aug. 26, 1947 to ‘Lady Anderson’. In part: ‘…Thank you very much for sending me a copy of [Jan] Smuts’ letter. I shall get some of it over in my next speech…’ Fine. Sold with holograph transmittal envelope. JAN SMUTS (1870 – 1950) was a South African statesman and military leader, and served as prime minister from 1919-24 and 1939-48. He was a staunch ally of the British during World War II.
